Summarize this article with:

Cheow Lan Lake has no road along it: everything happens from the water, and nearly everything leaves from the Ratchaprapha dam. This is also the piece of geography that catches visitors out. The lake is not beside Khao Sok village — the dam is roughly 65 to 67 km away by road, and the fee zone is separate.

Practically, the dam is a car park, a fee desk, a pontoon and a fleet of long-tail boats. Your tour meets here, raft house guests transfer to a boat here, and independent travellers pay the lake fees here before boarding.

Why the two entrances matter

The park is often described as two visits, and this is the reason: the land side has its entrance and ticket office at the village on route 401, and the lake side has its own at the dam. One ticket does not cover the other, and the drive between them takes well over an hour.

If you want the forest trails, the Sok river and the waterfalls, you sleep in the village. If you want raft houses, the three pillars and the sunrise mist, you go to the dam. Two nights in the village plus one on the lake is the usual way to get both.

The boats and the money

Boat transport on the lake is by long-tail, and the official park rate for renting one from the pier is quoted from 1,800 THB. Most visitors never see that figure on its own, because boat, lake fee, lunch, guide and raft house are packaged into the tour price.

The dam is also where the practicalities happen: fee desk, parking if you drive yourself, and the meeting points for shared minivans from Surat Thani, Krabi and Phuket. Getting to Khao Sok covers those connections route by route.

Do not plan the lake as a village side trip

Sleeping in Khao Sok village and 'popping over' to the lake in the afternoon does not work: the dam is about 65 to 67 km away and boats are booked in advance. Decide which side you sleep on before you book the room.

Frequently asked questions

About 65 to 67 km by road, well over an hour of driving. They are two separate parts of the park with separate entrances and fees, which is why the lake is not a short detour from the village.

At the dam, on the lake side, on top of the national park ticket. There is also a small pier cleaning charge per person. Most tours include both in their price.

For a guided tour or a raft house night, yes — these are booked ahead, especially in high season. Independent travellers can rent a long-tail from the park pier from 1,800 THB, subject to availability.
